Many individuals, organizations and corporations within our community understand the importance of supporting the work that Family Shelter Service does for victims of domestic abuse. One corporation that has provided ongoing financial and volunteer support is Nicor Gas, an AGL Resources Company. Headquartered in Naperville, IL, Nicor Gas is the largest natural gas distributor in northern Illinois, serving more than 2.2 million customers in 656 communities.
Nicor Gas was not only a $5,000 sponsor for this year’s gala, but as part of their company-wide Volunteer Day, one of their Employee Resource Groups, Inspire, has put in countless volunteer hours at our shelters offering maintenance, yard work and a host of other services. Inspire was initially formed as a woman’s employee resource group in 2009, and they found Family Shelter Service’s mission to be a good fit. “We’ve come to know Family Shelter Service better over the last several years,” LaPorte said, “and the one thing that always hits home with us is that you often think that this is something that happens to other people, but it could be anyone. It could be the person you sit next to at work.”
The Inspire Group has volunteered at our shelters for their annual Volunteer Day, in addition to donating gifts for our annual Holiday Shoppe event where clients can choose gifts for their children.
Recently, the Inspire group volunteered at Family Shelter Service’s intermediate housing facility in Naperville. When our shelter advocate told them she needed a new toy box, Inspire group members not only dropped off a new toy box, but two carloads of toys.
At the kick-off for their Volunteer Day efforts at the Naperville location, the executive sponsor host for Nicor Gas thanked the team for volunteering their time, commending the group for the support they provide to Family Shelter Service. She told them she knew with certainty that their efforts were appreciated, since an employee recently confided in her that she previously received help from Family Shelter Service. “That not only touched the hearts of the volunteers, but also made them realize some of the impact of their efforts at these facilities,” LaPorte said.
Family Shelter Service is extremely grateful to Nicor Gas and the Inspire group for their continuing commitment to help people in our community affected by domestic abuse.
