For the first nine years after its founding in 1976, Family Shelter Service operated a single shelter in Glen Ellyn. During those years, many people in the community stepped up to support the new organization and in 1986 a second shelter and walk-in counseling center was opened in Wheaton, named Zak House. This facility, which was later sold, housed 18 beds as well as offices and counseling rooms. At the same time, a walk-in counseling center was opened in Naperville to help increase the organization’s geographic reach. Just three years later, Family Shelter Service opened Detroy House in Naperville, a 13-bed facility named for early Family Shelter Service Director Marilyn Detroy.
