Moments in our History: Founding of our Children’s Program

In 1982 Family Shelter Service officially launched its Children’s Program and began working with the youngest victims of domestic abuse. Family Shelter Service recognized that stopping the cycle of violence meant addressing the emotional needs  of the children who are traumatized by these situations. In the 33 years since then, the Children’s Program at Family Shelter Service has grown and evolved. Our  Mom and Kids Program has become a highly effective tool for helping children who are coping with the conflicting emotions created by abuse. This highly popular program also helps the child bond with the non-abusing parent. Working with children affected by abuse when they are young can help to mitigate a lifetime of problems.
