Our counselors would say that seeing the transformations that take place in our clients is the most rewarding part of their job. One young girl recently touched us with her concern for helping others. Over the holidays, Sarah received gifts that her mother selected at Family Shelter’s Holiday Shoppe. In the spirit of giving, Sarah wanted to help others as well, but was unsure of how to do this. When Sarah’s mother enrolled Sarah and her siblings in Family Shelter’s Moms and Kids Program this winter, Sarah found a way. In the second week of the program, without her mother’s knowledge, Sarah presented her counselor with 62 cents which she had saved. “I just want to help,” she told her counselor. Sarah’s generosity of spirit is a wonderful example of children who live through trauma, yet are able to blossom as a result of their participation in our programs to become giving and caring young people.
